Superman (The Original)

Although Richard Donner's recent take on Superman set a new technical standard, the original Superman starring Christopher Reeves , Margot Kidder and Gene Hackman still endures. Christopher Reeve will forever be linked to the role of Superman. He plays the role superbly and the rest of the cast in additional to the well paced and intelligent script take the movie to a whole other level.

It also has one of the most memorable and emotionally engaging endings in cinema. This still has to be the best superhero film ever made.

Spiderman

Spiderman

At the time Sam Raimi's 2002 version of Spiderman really set the bar for Superhero films and the film really invested in character development as well as faced paced action. The colorful tone of the film and effects are still superb and it is no wonder is has spawned two sequels. Tobey Maguire plays the role well and a actors like Cliff Robertson and Willem Dafoe lend the film some real gravitas.

Batman Begins

Batman Begins

As well as being considered the greatest comic books of all time Batman has also enjoyed significant success at the cinema. The original gothic outings starring Michael Keaton and directed by Tim Burton were excellent however the franchise well and truly lost its way by the time Batman and Robin arrived. Christopher Nolan finally delivered the film that the fans had demanded for so long and cast the inspired Christian Bale as Batman. Nolan's vision of Batman fleshes out the complex character more than ever before and also adds a realistic edge to Batman's abilities. For the first time you know why he can do the things he does and the film is a modern classic. Unbelievably it looks like the Dark Night will surpass this feat and reach even new heights.

Unbreakable

Unbreakable

This is probably M. Night Shyamalan's most underrated film but as a completely realistic take on the superhero theme it really excels. The movie explores the concept of a former football star who mysteriously survives a catastrophic train wreck. After encountering Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson), an oddball comic collector he discovers that he has incredible strength and the ability to sense evil. Shyamalan creates an incredibly tense, suspenseful and engaging film which has a great script. Bruce Willis and the rest of the cast also help make this film even more believable. The Crow This movie would have made Brandon Lee (son of Bruce Lee) a huge star. Unfortunately, instead he died in a tragic shooting incident on set. The film is dark and gritty and offered a refreshing take on the superhero storyline.

With a strong cast and excellent dialog and special effects Richard Donner pulled out a remarkable achievement with this film. It manages to stay fast paced without sacrificing character development and this results in a thoroughly engaging film. By staying true to the legions of X-men fans the film has become one of the leading movies franchises which has led to some fantastic sequels.

The Hulk

The Hulk

Contrary to popular opinion I think this a good effort by Ang Lee. He managed to meld the character and action very well. The action scenes were breathtaking. I still remember the first time I saw the fight scene between Hulk and the mutant dogs. Eric Bana puts in a worthy performance as Bruce Banner and Nick Nolte is every inch the trademark villain. Although it does gets a little silly towards the end the rest of the film more than makes up for it.

Hellboy

Hellboy

Ok so I guess superhero is stretching it a bit with this film but Guillermo del Toro really pulls one out of the bag as he directs this imaginative story of a demon, raised from infancy after being conjured by and rescued from the Nazis, grows up to become a defender against the forces of darkness. The characters (especially Ron Perlmans Hellboy) are original and the effects spectacular. We look forward to Hellboy II - The Golden Army with much anticipation.

Hancock

Hancock

More of an antihero movies than anything Hancock tells the story of a down and out alcoholic loser with amnesia that's has superhero powers. Will Smith does a superb job of playing this character and Charlize Theron is her usual solid self with Jason Bateman added a slightly comic edge. Although the plot drifts a little towards the later half of the movie, the overall story is both engaging and intelligent.

The Crow

This movie would have made Brandon Lee (son of Bruce Lee) a huge star. Unfortunately, instead he died in a tragic shooting incident on set. The film is dark and gritty and offered a refreshing take on the superhero storyline.

Iron Man

Iron Man

This will be remembered for a charismatic performance by Robert Downey Junior who really makes the role of wealthy industrialist Tony Stark his own. A perfect blend of humour, action and character shows that you can have a superhero film that will please all ages. Although the film could be accused of being a bit transformers towards the end this is a memorable film that should have a lot of mileage in terms of sequels.

Does Robocop qualify? Surely that's a winner!

Kudos on picking Hancock and some other hero flicks NOT based off of Marvel or DC comics. I heartily approve!

Hmm...not sure i can agree with you about hellboy, but i do like the rest of your picks. great call on this one. however, i think two other superhero films worth mentioning though are Spider-Man 2 and The Dark Knight. As both films not only pushed the boundaries in terms of intriguing stories, they also explored a much deeper look into the character's themselves as they find that being a superhero isn't always about fame and glory. Plus, the incredibles wouldn't be a bad choice either.
